Adreanna Dietrich - Charitable Birthday Party

Her Project "In Her Words"...

Problem/Opportunity - There Are Needy families that aren't able to buy toys for their children during the holidays.

Proposed Solution - Have a birthday party where my guests would bring new and gently used toys for donating to the Lakeland Sharing Foundation instead of getting gifts for myself.

Action Plan - Plan a birthday/costume party with games, activities, food. We had a haunted house, haunted hay ride, food, and games. The games included a ping pong toss, bozo buckets, ring toss, balloon darts, pin the tail on the cat, craft table, penny toss, treasure hunt, musical chairs and limbo. I had to help decorate with Halloween decorations, make signs for the games and help make treats. I also had to make up a guest list that included my entire class, soccer team, other leadership students and other friends. We also had to find people to help with the party.

Results - We had a total of 45-50 kids come and about 20 adults attend. Between the guests and other people that heard about the project we raised over 100 toys. The Lakeland Sharing Foundation picked up the toys and will be distributing them to needy families in the community. They also used the event to help remind the local people to donate during the holidays by putting a picture and article in the local paper about the event.

Justin Ernst - Garbage Cleanup

His Project "In His Words"...

Problem/Opportunity - There is a lot of garbage down the streets near walmart so i went to clean it up.

Proposed Solution - Pick-up garbage for a few hours around the town.

Action Plan - Asking for help, and than I went for it but i only got help from 2 students, 4 adults, and myself.

Results - We got our picture in the paper and a few people came up to me and thanked us and asked us what we were doing. I think they were happy for us being here.

Inspiration - Looking out the window of my moms car and seeing the garbage!

Alex Olewinski - Pop Tops For Sick Children

His Project "In His Words"...

The problem or opportunity I found to turn into something I could help with was to help terminally ill children. Then in seventh grade we started to collect pop tops (for those that don`t know a pop top is what you use to open a soda can) for the Ronald McDonald House.Ronald McDonald House is basically a charity that helps fund treatment for terminally ill children. One of the ways they get money is to collect pop tops and melt them down for money. Which in turn helps fund them.

Proposed Solution - What I plan on doing is collecting pop tops to help fund Ronald McDonald House.

Action Plan - The steps that need to be taken are 1) Find a place where the pop tops are collected for Ronald McDonald house. 2) make or buy a collection box with information on it, so people know what they are collecting them for and how it helps. You can also make a competition for two or more teams for prize and the team with the most pop-ups wins. 3) count them up and send them in.

The Results for the project were my mind great and I think was a big success. Why? I collected over 12,000 pop tops! Plus is a lot of fun for me.

Inspiration - The idea came from my seventh grade class.07-08

Nikki Engels - Aluminum Cans, Ink Cartridges, Cell Phones

Her Project "In Her Words"...

Problem/Opportunity - There are too many aluminum cans, ink cartridges, and cell phones that are not recycled and just thrown away each year. People don`t know the facts about the pollution that all three of these items cause.

Proposed Solution -I developed a competition for the students at our martial arts school to bring in their cell phones, ink cartridges and aluminum cans. I will collect the items over a one month period. The person who brings in the most items will win a $25 gift certificate to Century. And the winning team will get a free pizza party at the end of the month.

Action Plan -First, I divided the teams up by age group and family so that each team was even. Then I posted posters explaining what I was doing. The second step was to keep track of all the items that I received and count them for each person. The third step was sending in the cell phones and ink cartridges. The forth step was throwing a recycling party where we could donate the pop tops to a different project. The fifth step was to add up the team points and announce the winners. The sixth step was to have a pizza party. The seventh step was to take the cans to the recycling center. The eight step was to use the money earned and donate to other projects.

Results - We collected 83 cell phones, 136 ink cartridges, and 11,265 aluminum cans.

We found that 1 cell phone pollutes 132,000 liters of water.
83x132,000 = 10,956,000 liters of water. So just with the cell phones that we collected we saved around
2,894,269 gallons of water!

It was a very successful turnout; we had a lot of people helping and contributing their items.
