'Leadership
Challenges' Are A Method Of Practicing Leadership Traits Through
Taking ACTION and Recording The Results... ...effectively
making the NLT students the action heroes of their own journey
"Traits"
are distinguishing qualities or characteristics of a
person, where "Character" is the sum total of these traits.
There are
hundreds of personality traits, far too many to
practice here. Instead, we will focus on a few that are
crucial for becoming a LEADER. The more of these you display
as a leader, the more your team members will believe and trust in
you.
Team
Leaders are provided with a manual and lessons on each one
of these leadership traits. Students will complete the
challenges and record them online. For every action that
they complete, they will receive a point. For certain point
levels, they will receive a virtual belt. For each project
they complete they will receive a number of points based on
difficulty level.
The
NLT
Student's Mission Is To... 1) LEARN real leadership through taking ACTION in their
own lives
2) LEARN something about themselves in the process
3) COMPLETE community action projects that
make a difference in the lives of others
4) EARN their virtual NLT black belt
through commitment/work ethic
5) ENJOY the journey as they
move forward in life.
Students
Will Be Completing The
Following Challenges Along Side Of Building
Their Leadership Project Portfolios...
We all have heroes, people we look up to and aspire to be
like. These are people we admire for certain desirable traits that we wish to
master ourselves. Our heroes are people who have been there, people who
have made a difference, leaders who we plan to model our own
leadership after. Our heroes are there for us as a measuring stick for our
own future greatness.
YOUR MISSION: Make a list of 5 or more 'living heroes' -
include a description of who they are and what they've done to make
them heroic. Also, include the reasons that they inspire you to take
action on your projects, your schoolwork, and other things that are
important to you to demonstrate real leadership yourself in your own
life. Recommend 5 Living Heroes

Our system will keep track of all of your
heroes and any notes that you make on them. you have the ability to
delete heroes and add as many as you like. Remember, you will become
just like the people you hang out with. So build a list of heroes
and do your best to spend time with them and take on some empowering
leadership traits.
Throughout your life you may have found certain opportunities to be met
with a level of adversity. You'll need to demonstrate your
courage to overcome that adversity and make the best of your future
opportunities. Also, you'll sometimes find obstacles and fear to get in the way of
you accomplishing your goals. Just remember that 'demonstrating courage' is
NOT the absence of fear, but
instead learning to deal with fear effectively. Courage is learning
to overcome challenges to find success waiting on the other
side.
YOUR MISSION: The challenges
below will help you practice courage: 1) Go and ask for help with a difficult problem that you are facing,
consult your peers,
teachers, parents, heroes and use their advice to overcome the
challenge you were facing. 2) Go out and do something that you
normally would never do. Try something new and challenging. Be sure
that is safe and doesn't affect your health in any way, but be sure
to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

2) Story of
Something You Did That You Normally Wouldn't Have Done.
Nothing gets done in this world without taking action. This
world is filled with people who talk about change and moving forward
but never take action on their goals. As a Leader, you are not one
of them. You will learn to take action on the things that are
important to you. The best time to do "IT" (whatever 'IT'
is for you) is RIGHT NOW as
procrastination is the opposite of taking action. All true leaders
have the ability to translate 'good intentions' into reality and to
sustain it with action and behavior.
YOUR MISSION: You will be choosing 5 or more
actions that must be completed for your future success. DO IT NOW.
Fill out that college application and send it in, right a letter to someone in a
position of authority to make that thing happen, go and study HARD for your test
even though you could be out with friends, Talk with your teacher to
get extra help with that subject that's been giving you trouble.
These ACTIONS must help you move forward toward the achievement of
your goals. Each Action that you record must provide some time of
positive results, include the results as well.
You will become a person of ACTION by developing a
habit of "Do It Now" Recommend 5 Actions

Your self image is the way you "See" yourself, its the
image of yourself in your own mind. Could you imagine if you never
took care of your physical external appearance? What if you never
took a shower/bath, or maybe only one shower each month? You’d
probably smell and feel a little dirty right? The same thing happens
to your self image if you neglect it and don' take care of it.
You'll need to take care of your self image and
celebrate your wins if you want to become a confident self assured
leader. You can do this with
praise and encouragement. Remember
the great things that you’ve done in the past, so that you can
continue to be successful in the future!
YOUR MISSION:
You will write down 10 or
more things you like about yourself. You can include things you like
about your physical appearance,
your personality traits, any special skills that you posses, and
include any major accomplishments or milestones that you've hit
along the way. Do this now. Recommend 10 Acts of Positive Self Image

When you are in a position of
Leadership you need to learn to celebrate your wins and
be comfortable with who you are. You’ll find that your confidence
and positive
self image will grow tremendously - which will only enhance your
ability to lead!
To this point in your training you've been working on
yourself, developing your own successful traits for leadership. Now,
you'll be practicing your leadership out in the community. The
National Leadership Team is designed to assist you in providing
incredible service in your community so that you have an opportunity
to apply these Leadership Traits 'out in the field'. This is your
opportunity to Practice Leadership and Gain Leadership Experience.
YOUR MISSION: Go out and
record a Leadership Project that follows the 5 rules of Project Based
Leadership Training. (View Project
Training) You will need to complete a new project
specifically for this requirement to fulfill your SERVICE
requirement. It will be tracked along with the rest of your
community projects and you will receive points for the level of
difficulty of your project as well as 1 point for completing this
summary below.
Write a Short Description of Your Favorite
Community Project.

Small things can become BIG things with proper
discipline. To become a leader, you'll need to
develop the discipline to complete the task even though it may be
overwhelming or difficult. A great definition of "DISCIPLINE" is
"Knowing What To Do and Doing What You Know". The best way to learn
how to apply discipline and get results with it in your life is to
practice. You will be practicing random tasks
YOUR MISSION:
You will learn to commit to completing a LARGE number of SOMETHING
over time (30-90 days) by tracking your progress each and every day.
(Practicing 50 free throws each night over 60 days = 3000 free
throws in just 2 months)
(500 random acts of kindness is just 4-5 acts a day for 60 days)
(To Walk/Run 100 miles is to Walk/Run 3 miles a day for 33 days)
(Learning to play 3 songs on the piano can happen from daily
practice over 45-60 days)

Awareness is mastery over your thoughts. Thoughts are
things, they are certain types of energy that will create a certain
type of result. When you think defeating, negative thoughts about
how you CAN'T do something, guess what, you're not likely to do it.
When you constantly tell yourself you're not good enough or you're
too dumb to do that, you can actually make that come true. BUT, you
can also change your thoughts to be positive, empowering thoughts.
This is much more than just 'positive thinking' as you'll have to
take real action on these thoughts. "I am a person of action and I choose to do things right away"
"I am someone who turns in my homework on time and to the best of my
ability"
"I am a smiling person filled with joy" - These thoughts produce
a very different kind of result.
YOUR MISSION:
Work through the 5 steps below. This is a journey into your mind to
rid yourself of defeating thoughts and actions and replace them with
empowering thoughts and actions.
1) Jot down some of your current thoughts - keep a
journal, talk with your friends and family.

Leaders never stop growing, they never stop learning. 'Seeking
wisdom' is a trait that leaders develop so they are prepared when
the opportunity presents itself. The Japanese Samurai used to live
with the idea "Either Preparing For Battle or Engaged In Battle". So
develop a habit of seeking knowledge.
YOUR MISSION: Keep a list of Books,
Articles, and Conversations that have helped you grow. Also include
a note about the lesson you learned from each. Recommend 10 Acts of Seeking Wisdom

Conversation With My
Dad
Today I had one of those
father son talks. He reminded me today how proud he was that
I was taking on this new challenge in my life. That meant a
lot to me as he normally doesn't tell me that he's proud. I
learned how some people feel something inside and sometimes
it's hard to express it. I also learned how sometimes you
can just see it in their eyes, that words aren't always
necessary.
Imagination is the ability to make a mental image
of something that is not yet a reality. Vision is a thought,
concept, or object formed by the imagination. When you can conceive
an idea, a project, or a plan that has not happened yet, part of
your leadership ability will be found in sharing that idea with
others and inspiring others to take action with you.
YOUR MISSION:
To complete
this requirement, you will use your creative ability
to envision a community project that is not real yet, and make it
a reality by sharing your vision with others, inspiring your groups
cooperation and participation, and leading them to success. This
project will also be recorded with the rest of your community
projects. You will receive points for the difficulty level of your
project as well as 1 additional point for completing this summary.

"Clara's
experience with the Leadership Quest Program has been very
positive. Although we can see some very positive changes in
many ways, there was one incident that spoke volumes to us;
we had spoken to Clara's current teacher during open house
and she was telling us how much Clara participates in class
and raises her hand all the time. Until she set that
goal, every teacher prior had told us how quiet and
reserved she was!"

"...Its
been amazing to watch our youngest daughter transform from a
shy 5 year-old to a confident 9 year old. She has
experienced the satisfaction that comes with overcoming
one's fears to achieve your goals.
We have also witnessed a remarkable level of
focus and determination in our older daughter. She has
become goal oriented and has worked very hard for her
multiple achievements...
We are very pleased with the [NLT] Leadership
Program. Not only does Mr. Engels teach the skills needed to
advance in martial arts, through this website and this
program, he is helping to mold our children into responsible
citizens. His leadership program focuses on the development
of positive character traits through lessons involving
goal-setting and community service projects... The
Leadership Program comes highly recommended by all members
of the Raykovich family!"
