Martial Arts Is About Perfecting Character

"The ultimate aim of karate lies not in
victory or defeat, but in the perfection
of the character of its participants."
~ Master Gichin Funakoshi

The Old Way VS The New Way Of Teaching Character Development
The Old Way of teaching leadership education, character development, and motivating and inspiring children, youth, and teens was through speakers or books about someone else's journey toward leadership.

The New Way is to make these students become the ACTION hero of their own journey. Give them challenges to take action in their communities and take real action on their goals and achievements. They will be building confidence and leadership skills through creating their own successful stories and recording it along the way.

What's more powerful, giving a student a book or inspiring lecture about their ability to succeed... or ...helping them become a part of a team that logs 5000 community projects effectively teaching something very real about confidence, discipline, initiative, courage, action, awareness, and above all leadership?

Working With Your Local School Systems
When the community comes together to help our children, everyone wins. You have in front of you a very powerful program for teaching Leadership, Courage, Initiative, Integrity, Respect, and Discipline to the students of your martial arts school as well as the students at the local elementary, middle, and high schools. When you follow the curriculum laid out at www.LeadershipInstructors.com, you will begin to build a lasting relationship with local schools by donating your time in teaching character development through ACTION based teaching. Oh, and as a martial arts school owner, all of this 'Leading By Example' that you'll be dishing out through your own action may provide some new students for your school in the process.

Because public schools are not a commercial enterprise like your martial arts school, the NLT is setup to allow you to pay for your students memberships and include an unlimited number of schools that will be training underneath you. You will be allowed up to 100 members to use the program at the base price and you'll have access to purchase future packages of 50 students as you see fit. This is a great tool to help the schools systems and allow you great exposure for the incredible work that you have done with the students. Truly a Win-Win for all.

Martial Arts Training and Leadership Training
These two areas go hand in hand as they both have to do with character development and self mastery. The more you train, the more you learn. The harder you train the better you get. In this way, your martial arts school is the perfect learning environment for learning REAL Leadership through project based leadership training. Take advantage of this and start your PBLT training today!

MA Instructors
I'm going to assume that your school teaches something very real about leadership, that you have a leadership program in place, and that your students look to your martial arts program for direction in becoming a leader.

Are you providing experiences and opportunities for them to learn real leadership outside of your martial arts school yet? Great, that's why the National Leadership Team was created. Use this site to track your students progress and assist them in learning REAL Leadership skills and experiences that they can draw on for the the rest of their life.

Your goal should be to provide a self defense education not only from kicks and punches, but also to teach self defense against mediocrity, bad leadership, negative choices, violence, and injustice.

As master teachers of the martial arts, we should be helping our students internalize lessons of our heroes and leaders that came before us. We should be training to internalize character traits like integrity, patience, service, courage, leadership, justice, honor, and peace. These are among a few of the ingredients that make up our heroes and leaders like Rosa Parks, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandella, Gichin Funakoshi, Morihei Ueshiba, and Bruce Lee. These are true leaders in their field because of the action that they took and the stand that they made for what they believed was right. We should, through our training, not only have a remarkable side kick, but we should begin to embody the traits of these great leaders before us. PBLT is simply a method of practicing these things in our community at the same level as we train our martial arts in class.

Making the Right Choices
On our path through life, we are constantly making choices. Every choice that we make will have a positive result or a negative result. The decisions that you make at your age will shape the rest of your life forever. When you make the choice to learn REAL leadership by taking action in your community, there can only be one type of results - REMARKABLY POSITIVE RESULTS!

Leadership is Learned
Leaders are not born, they are created through experiences, opportunities, and overcoming adversity. Whether you already exhibit leadership qualities, or you feel like you have no leadership traits at all, you CAN become a leader.  Your journey towards leadership starts with a community project and your project portfolio.

Learning Skills For The Rest Of Your Life
Completing community action leadership projects at any age is impressive, especially when you are influencing others around you to help. You will help students learn Leadership skills through your PBLT training that will help them through Grade School, Middle School, High School, College, Your Career and beyond.

Through the NLT, You will complete a project that is important to you.
Do you care about animals, the environment, political issues, peace, world awareness…etc? Your projects can range from many different types and topics and should not only be important to you but be fun and educational too.

Start Small and Grow
Your initial project can be something small. An example would be finding 10 friends to perform 10 acts of kindness each. That equals 100 acts of kindness! Or another example would be to find 10 friends to help you pick up trash along the side of the road (with parents help of course). Your project doesn't have to be huge, every little bit counts! Begin to build your Project Portfolio with small projects, build success, and then grow your projects as you get more experienced.

Large Scale Projects
Once you've successfully completed a handful of smaller projects, you can start tackling a larger project that includes more people and will help a bigger cause. The martial artists of the NLT are some of the most successful participants because your martial arts leadership training goes hand in hand with community projects outside of the dojo. Turn that energy into ACTION in your community and watch your Leadership Skills develop through inspiring others to WANT to help you in your projects.

"Clara's experience with the Leadership Quest Program has been very positive. Although we can see some very positive changes in many ways, there was one incident that spoke volumes to us; we had spoken to Clara's current teacher during open house and she was telling us how much Clara participates in class and raises her hand all the time. Until she set that goal, every teacher prior had told us how quiet and reserved she was!"

- Tami Schroeder

"...Its been amazing to watch our youngest daughter transform from a shy 5 year-old to a confident 9 year old. She has experienced the satisfaction that comes with overcoming one's fears to achieve your goals.
We have also witnessed a remarkable level of focus and determination in our older daughter. She has become goal oriented and has worked very hard for her multiple achievements...
We are very pleased with the [NLT] Leadership Program. Not only does Mr. Engels teach the skills needed to advance in martial arts, through this website and this program, he is helping to mold our children into responsible citizens. His leadership program focuses on the development of positive character traits through lessons involving goal-setting and community service projects... The Leadership Program comes highly recommended by all members of the Raykovich family!"
